USD No. 107 may be offer Spanish class next term; Drivers Ed meeting this week

USD 107 Board approves supplemental contracts

Kenny Mizner, president, called the regular meeting of the Board of Education for USD No. 107 to order last Monday in the meeting room at the district office. Those present were Kenny Mizner, Brandon Hollerich, Brenden Wirth, Bobi Fogo, Lori Yelken, Marc Grout, Rex Boley, Sam Meyers, Janet Higer, Megan Duskie and Roger Meier, Jr.

Roger Meier took a picture of the board for the school’s yearbook and then left the meeting. Megan Duskie addressed the board to discuss the 21-22 third grade class. She provided comparison information between second and third grade curriculum and strongly recommended dividing the class to better serve the pupils’ needs.

Final plans for moving staff in elementary and RHJSH are being worked on.

The gym floor is to be refinished in August.

Transportation is working on SPED summer school and drivers. Jenna Langer, Rock Hills agriculture education teacher, has been selected to be one of the 20 educators invited to the Texas State University Ag Mechanics Academy. It is a 10 day intensive academy that gives further training to beginning educators in agricultural mechanics.

Drivers Education classes began Monday and conclude today (Thursday) with the driving portion to follow.

Rock Hills will be hosting the Kansas-Nebraska Northern Plains League vs. Twin Valley Conference All Star Basketball game on Saturday, June 5 and volleyball game on Friday June 11

Two FFA teams will be competing at State CDEs- Livestock Eval and Ag

The elementary school was almost done with end of the year testing. State assessments have been completed by all students, including remote students. MAPS testing was almost done. After one-on-one practice administering FastBridge screening tests, elementary teachers tested their students throughout April.

Additional reading intervention materials are being ordered for phonological awareness (Haggerty) and phonics (95% Group). The plan is to prepare these materials over summer and begin implementing them during Jump Start.

The district leadership team along with Kansas TASN MTSS staff worked with Rock Hills Elementary teachers and Rock Hills Junior-Senior High English Language Arts teachers in evaluating and selecting ELA curriculum to recommend to the board of education to adopt for the start of the2021-2022 school year.

Spanish may be offered next year to high school students.

The NC3 Consortium of 4 (Rock Hills, Waconda, Osbourne, Beloit) is working on a grant application to fund curriculum-equipment-training for the 2021-2022 school year. Targeted areas are Business and Industry Certification for 2021-2022 school year in: Data Analytics – TRANE Corp – Science Class, Multi-meter – Snap-On Corp – CTE Classes, 3D Printing – Dremel – CTE Class, Precision Measurements – CTE.

Rock Hills School District has submitted its ESSER II Funding Plan for approval.

Eric Johnson of Johnson Architects from Concordia will assess the water issue in the elementary building basement.

Funding for the TLC Elementary and Middle School program has been secured for next year.

Mr. Boley asked that summer supplemental contracts be offered as a separate contract payable in two payments over the summer.

Mr. Boley reviewed the forecasted enrollment for the 21-22 school year. He discussed future class size and possible divisions.

Mr. Boley recommended the board move to a percentage increase instead of a flat increase for classified pay. At the request of the board, Mr. Boley will gather information for the June meeting.

Mr. Meyers shared the Kansas can Star Recognition Program and what ratings mean.

The board held the first reading of the handbooks for the 21-22 school year.

Mr. Boley provided information to the board that he budgeted some of the ESSER II funds for a Summer Teacher Academy to be held this summer for the teachers.

The board held the first reading of the following policies: JGEC Sexual Harassment-Student Title IX.

It was approved to keep the adult meal price at $4.15 for the 21-22 school year.

The following 2021-2022 food service appointments were approved:

Food service representative - Rex Boley; Hearing officer-free and reduced meal application appeals - Rex Boley; K-5 determining official for lunches - Sarah Ortman; and 6-12 determining official for lunches - Jaid Runft.

The following classified work agreement dates for the 21-22 school year were approved: Bus drivers – Aug. 12 - May 13; cooks – Aug. 9 to May 17; MTSS Para’s – Aug. 10 to May 16; elementary secretary – July 26 to June 10; junior high secretary – July 26 to June 3.

The board approved joining the KJUMP Coalition.

The board accepted the donation from Central Valley Ag for the Hometown Choice program of $40.70.

They approved the Wonders curriculum by McGraw Hill for the elementary and the Houghton Mifflin Curriculum for the junior-senior high.

The board approved the following supplemental recommendations as presented. High school: Head volleyball coach, Tracy Anderes; head football coach, Sawyer Havenstein; head boys basketball coach, Zach Duffy; head girls basketball coach, Jamie Harvey; head track coach, Sawyer Havenstein; cheer coach, Alex Carabajal; dance coach, Jessica Shulda; scholars bowl coach, Travis Cox; summer weight room, Sawyer Havenstein; junior high

head volleyball coach, Jamie Harvey; head football coach, Sawyer Havenstein; head track coach, Sawyer Havenstein; and summer weight room, Zach Duffy.

The board accepted the resignations, effective at the end of the school year for David Scott Young, bus driver and Travis Cox, junior high scholars bowl sponsor.

The board approved to extend a contract for 15 days to Cassi Owen, elementary principal, at her calculated daily rate during the month of June.

The board approved to accept applications to hire an elementary teacher.

The next regular meeting is scheduled for 7 p.m., Monday, June 14,in the board room of the district office.
