Victorian festival
With Memorial Day weekend approaching, it’s time to look forward to Superior’s Lady Vestey Victorian festival. The annual event was cancelled last year because of the COVID-19 pandemic. The event returns this year.
Area residents and businesses are encouraged to decorate bicycles for display outside. The theme of this years festival is ‘Bon Voyage,” a tribute to the globe trotting career of Evelyn Vestey.
The festival kicks off Friday, May 28 with Grill Games, a BBQ competition and judging contest at the Superior Country Club. There is an admission charge for the event. Friday will also feature a car cruise night. There will be a free movie at the Crest Theatre. A street dance and beer garden is at Superior Bowl.
Saturday begins with a Race to Remember, a one mile, 5k, walk or run race. The always popular FFA petting zoo is back. There will be concession stands and food vendors located throughout the downtown area at various times of the day. The parade gets underway in the morning. There will be a bike parade. The main parade begins shortly afterward. An antique car display will be held. A zip line, spider climb, obstacle course and bubble mania will be some of the entertainment offerings. Beverly Beavers will reprise her Lady Vestey presentation.
The Nuckolls County Museum will be open Saturday and Sunday. There will be living history program presentations and the museum buildings will be open.
LaRue’s Little Ponies, a long-time favorite and a staple at the festival, will not return. The family took the decision to discontinue the attraction after changes in the family structure.
There will be hospital bed races and a pie eating contest. A Victorian Tea is being served. This event is by reservation. A free watermelon feed is on the schedule.
Werner’s Cowboy Corner will be open.
Sunday features a one-person golf scramble. The 1st Nebraska Volunteer Brass Band, a Civil War reenactment group, will be in concert.
The traditional Memorial Day service will be conducted at Evergreen Cemetery, Monday.
