Puffs

I have a sister-in-law from Chicago who expressed her surprise at the length, depth, and extent Nebraskans discuss current weather conditions.

On one of her first visits to the Lawrence area she was blessed with a rain. After being out and visiting with several local people she noted the following: “In Chicago, if it rains we acknowledge the rain and move on to other subjects. Here (meaning Nebraska) if you ask someone about the rain last night, you get a half hour discussion.”

At the time she did not appreciate the importance of an inch of rain coming at the right time.

I bring this up because of the Sunday night rain in our neck of the woods.

How many remember the old adage: “April showers bring May flowers.”

The Sunday night rain came the night of May 2 to May 3, not in April. I looked at the Little Blue NRD “Rain” web site to see just what rain totals were as the overall condition of the area since last autumn has been pretty dry. Nice rains fell in March, but April . . . it was dry.

A number of places had the April rain total doubled, or more in just one overnight rain in May. A couple of examples:

Hastings: April, 1.7”; May, 2.1”.

Lawrence: April, 1.9”; May, 1.8”.

Nelson: April, (No report); May, 1.3”.

Deweese: April, 2.3”; May, 1.45”.

Blue Hill: April 1.8”; May, 0.9”.

Nora: April, 1.9”; May; .7”.

Fairfield: April 1.7”; May: 1.2”.

My dear sister-in-law is no longer with us but I know she now appreciates all those extended discussion about the weather, rain in particular.

I hope the ‘May Showers’ bring benefits to all of us who depends so much those rains.

There is a difference.

That is, between those national level Democrats and our local level Democrats.

Over the years I’ve been a little surprised how tightly Democrats at the local level (my friends and neighbors) have held onto the Democratic Party leaders at the national level. I have come to the conclusion there is such a difference between the levels of participation (local or national) that the difference should be obvious.

But it is not. I was reading something this past weekend that brought this out clearly.

There are many issues that could be used as an example, but I’ll use the issue of “transgendered women.”

Specifically, women’s sports.

I don’t know a single Democrat who supports the concept of a man who “says” he is a women. And then, it is OK for that person to take part in women’s sports.

The national Democratic Party is pushing this concept of men competing against women just because that man “says” he is a women.

The disconnect between the national and local levels of the Democratic Party was brought out last week.

Florida became the tenth state to ban biological males from participating in women’s sports. In fact, there are 35 of the 50 states that have introduced such legislation in their states governing bodies to date. (The states are all controlled by “local” politicians, not those at the National level.) Not all legislation have been passed . . . yet. However, many are expected to pass.

To be honest I haven’t heard a Democratic member in Nuckolls or Webster County say anything like the following:

• Yes, I support the idea people can change their gender by simply saying so.

• Yes, I support the idea of paying to kill babies via abortions and using your tax dollars to pay for it.

• Yes, I support the concept that we really don’t have a southern border. People from all over the world should be able to come across the border. We’re rich enough, we can pay for it.

• Yes, we can change the meaning of the word “infrastructure.” I support the current bill on infrastructure even though less than 20 percent of what the government proposes will pay for “traditional infrastructure” projects.

• Etc.

I just don’t hear local Democrats saying things like that, but the National level Democrats say it all without worry.

Most all Democrats I know do not like changing the meaning of words just to attempt control of the American culture and government.

However, they are just like me. I was very reluctant to change my voting identity. I never voted for Jimmy Carter, or for Bill Clinton, or Mr. Obama, but it took a local election for county clerk for me to change as there were no Democrats on the primary ballot and if I wanted to have a say in who got elected, I had to change my voting registration to Republican. I did and then went back in to change it back to Democrat.

I finally realized that I never voted for a Democratic Presidential nominee since 1969. I don’t know what that meant, but I change my voting registration to Republican.

I may, or may not, remain so. As I’ve said in the past, I never voted for President Trump so much in 2016 as I voted against Hillary Clinton. I voted against Joe Biden in 2020 as well after hearing the Democratic plan to continue the Obama era plan to “Fundamentally Remake America.”
