RHHS track team has season opener

The Rock Hills High School boys and girls track and field teams opened their 2021 season at the Bennington Invitational hosted by Bennington High School.

The boys team finished in eighth place with 26 points while the girls were in seventh place with 31 points.

Other teams competing at the meet were Eli-Saline, Clifton-Clyde, Minneapolis, Canton-Galva, Tescott, Herington, Lincoln, Wakefield School and Rural Vista. Canton-Galva did not enter a girls team.

Points were awarded to the first six finishers in an event.

Alyssa Davis was in eighth place in the girls 100 meter hurdles.

Grace Ayers took fifth place points in the 100 meter dash. Austyn Groote was in 13th place.

The 4 x 100 meter relay team finished in fourth place with the time of 56.65 seconds.

Hannah Simmelink and Paige Zadina-Segura competed in the 400 meter dash.

Lauren Whelchel took sixth place in the 800 meter run with her time of 2:50.38. Raylynn Anderes and Simmelink also ran in this event.

Ayers held down fifth place in the 200 meter dash with her time of 30.23 seconds. Groote and Zadina-Segura also competed in this event.

Whelchel cleared the bar at 4'4" to take fourth place in the high jump. She cleared 7' for second place in the pole vault.

Ayers recorded a third place finish in the long jump with her leap of 14'10.75". Avery Brown held down fourth place with her leap of 13'9.25".

Davis competed in the shot put and discus.

Wyatt Evert competed in the boys 100 meter dash.

The 4 x 100 meter relay team finished in eighth place.

Seth Pennell earned the third place points in the 499 meter dash with his time of 59.37 seconds.

Sonny Johnson also ran in this event.

Evert and Johnson took part in the 200 meter dash.

Jerrod Gillett earned the third place points in the high jump with his leap of 5'2". He took fourth place in the long jump with his leap of 19'1".

Grant Meyers was the first place finisher in the pole vault with a 12'5" effort.

Pennell participated in the long jump.

Mason Higer entered the triple jump but finished out of the points range.

Buck Luedke, Caden Slate and Evert competed in the shot put.

Evert and Slate were contestants in the discus throw.

Kenny Sterling competed in the javelin throw.

The Grizzlies travel to Beloit, Tuesday, for the St. John's Invitational. The meet has a 3 p.m. start time.
