Thayer County voters approve school bond issue

Thayer County voters approved a $5.275 million school bond issue in a special mail-in only election, Tuesday, March 9. The unofficial tally was 534 in favor with 518 opposed.

The bond funds will be added to a special building fund of $3.3 million to be used for improvements to school district facilities. Informational brochures were distributed in Thayer County communities prior to the election.

Improvements are being panned in several areas. One project would connect the elementary and high school buildings. New disaster shelters will be constructed. Additional classroom space will be added for special education. Performing arts, band and vocal will have a dedicated area.

The school board predicts a potential levy decrease when compared to the previous five years.

Construction is expected to begin later this spring and be completed in 2022.
