Students and staff from Superior Elementary School gathered to watch the participants in the Superior Wildcat FFA chapter parade on Drive Your Tractor to School Day. The event was part of the National FFA Week celebrations at the high school. As part of the week's activities, FFA members visited elementary school classrooms to present overviews of farming and livestock practices. The aim is to inspire the students as future FFA members Students also participated in stick horse racing and hula hooping.
Superior Elementary School students and staff gathered outside the school, Friday, to watch Superior FFA members take part in a Drive Your Tractor to School Day parade. The event was part of National FFA Week celebrated at the high school.
The Superior Wildcat Chapter of the FFA, a group formerly known as the Future Farmers of America, observed National FFA Week at the high school.
Each day featured themes and activities for chapter members to participate in. The highlight of the week was Flannel Friday, where members wore flannel shirts to school. Given the weather that day, it was a good idea. The week closed out with Drive Your Tractor to School Friday. Several students arrived at school in tractors ranging in size from large to larger. Somehow two combines made it into the mix The vehicles departed the parking lot south of the elementary school. They followed a route which was lined with Superior Elementary School students who were out to watch the display along with their teachers and paraeducators.
This is the first school year in which junior high school students are able to participate in the FFA program. The occasion was marked with a pizza party and members viewed the movie "Barnyard."
Chapter members visited elementary school classrooms to familiarize the students with the FFA program. They provided oversights into agricultural and livestock practices. The intent is to inspire these young students to aspire to membership in the FFA when they reach the appropriate grade level.
Area businesses joined in the festivities. Chapter members painted signs in the windows of local businesses in support of the FFA. In return, FFA members baked 25 cherry pies, in a nod to George Washington and his chopping down a cherry tree, and presented the pies to the participating businesses.
Stick horse races and hula hoop roping were some of the fun events members participated in.
For Seth Going and Brent Thomas, the FFA chapter advisers, it was one step in the year-long process of being a FFA member.
