Another Superior native to return home in April

Nikki Holling is returning home to Superior. The 2003 Superior High School graduate is now Nikki Femlee. She met her husband, Cortney, through the E-Harmony web site while residing in Colorado. Nikki is a stay-at-home mom for the couple's five children. Tyler is 15 years of age, Camden is nine, Keenston is four while Gracie and Blakely, who were both adopted from China, are seven and six years old respectively. Cortney is a freight broker. He is originally from the San Luis Valley area of southern Colorado. He is no stranger to the charms of small town living.

The couple will be moving back to Superior from Windsor, Colorado, where they currently reside. Nikki's parents are Gary Holling and Sandra Tietjen. Her grandparents are Betty and Gerald Carpenter, Dick Holling and her aunt, Brenda Carpenter, are all Superior residents.

The Femlees purchased a house in Superior to serve as a base when they visited family in Superior. With five children and two adults to provide accommodations for, the couple would rent a minimum of two motel rooms when they came to visit. The purchase of a house allowed them to stay together as well as provide all the amenities a house provides such as a full kitchen, separate bedrooms and more.

The Femlees purchased a house located at 302 North Kansas Street in Superior. The house was located within walking distance of stores and restaurants as well as the movie theatre, auditorium and parks.

The couple discovered the house needed some TLC when they made the purchase in January, 2020. The house was built for Dr. John Holland and his wife Veva, in 1922. He was a dentist with his practice in downtown Superior. The couple had two sons. The Holland family moved to California in 1934. The house went through a series of owners in subsequent years. The replacement of the roof was a major project and expense. Nikki's father, Gary, is a carpenter. He provided the couple with his expertise and skills as they renovated the interior of the house to its former glory.

The couple were made aware of the possibilities of realizing additional income when they are not using the house by listing it through Airbnb, a short term on-line rental marketplace. They named the house 'Superior Cottage." It is the only Airbnb in Superior. There are other Airbnb rentals in neighboring communities such as Red Cloud, Cadams and Formoso.

Airbnb was founded in San Francisco. Two college roommates placed an air mattress in the living room of their apartment. They advertised it for rent on a website they created. It proved to be popular in a city where hotel, motel and short term stay accommodations were in short supply. The company secured additional funding over the years as it expanded its presence across the United States and then expanded globally. The COVID-19 pandemic has put a damper on the company's revenues as travel has been restricted in the United States and around the world.

Airbnb makes renting a place to stay a seamless affair for both host and guest. They serve as the medium for payment from the guest and disbursement to the host. Listings range from an air bed (the original concept and the air in Airbnb) to luxury vacation rentals in exotic locales.

The Femlees found their experience to be glitch free with Airbnb. They submitted their information to the company. It included pictures of the interior and exterior, a listing of the amenities available in the house and the surrounding area and any restrictions the hosts would impose such as number of occupants, pets, etc. The couple was approved and Cortney was recognized as a super host by Airbnb for his exceptional service to their guests. The couple began accepting guests in June, 2020.

Nikki reports their bookings have been good despite the pandemic. The facility has all five star reviews from guests. Hosts and guests rate each other. This allows Airbnb, hosts and guests a portal to weed out undesirable guests and hosts.

With family located in Superior, the Femlees are able to address any issues with the house which may arise. When a guest checks out of the house, it is cleaned and readied for the next guest. Essentials are restocked, kitchen utensils cleaned and the house made ready for another occupant.

The Femlees are purchasing another residence in Superior. Nikki looks forward to returning to her roots. She and Cortney want to raise their children in the family friendly atmosphere which makes Superior special. Welcome home, Nikki. Well, in April anyway.
