Vic Schoenberger Jr., 71, of WaKeeney, Kan. died Friday, Feb. 5, 2021, at HaysMed of pneumonia. Vic was born July 22, 1949, in Quinter, Kan., to Victor, Sr. and Lydia (Kreut- zer) Schoenberger. He grew up in WaKeeney, Kan. As a freshman in high school Vic attended seminary school in Oklahoma City, Okla., for one year and returned to Trego County. He graduated from Trego Community High School with the Class of 1967. He married Sandy Kroeger on Nov. 15, 1969. They had three children: Tonya, Tracey and Vickie. They divorced in 2002.
He was drafted in 1971 and went to Fort Leonard Wood, Mo. Then he went to Korea where he was a helicopter mechanic. He came home to Junction City, Kan., where he was honorably discharged in 1974. He went to work on the family farm and at the John Deere dealership in WaKeeney. After leaving John Deere, Vic and his brother, Kenny, took over the family farm. He was there until 1997. In answering an ad in the newspaper ,Vic took his dream job in Mankato, Kan., driving a combine and working for Carl Figgins Custom Harvesting and later Mankato Livestock. He always said, "Those were the best years of my life." Vic lived in Mankato for 22 years.
On May 14, 2011, he married Colleen Wedermyer. He moved back to the WaKeeney area in 2017. Vic and Colleen made their home on a farm in southern Trego County; he worked for GG&T Cattle Company and Gove County. He was a member of the Knights of Columbus, VFW in WaKeeney and American Legion in Jewell County. Vic was a hard worker all of his life. If you met him, you wouldn't forget him. He never met a stranger. He was a giving man and helped others any time he could. His family and his faith were important to him. He enjoyed any social gatherings and playing cards.
Vic is survived by his wife, Colleen; daughters, Tonya Pearson (Jerot)
and Vickie Greener (David) both of Gardner, Kan .; son, Tracey Schoenberger of Kansas City; stepchildren, Staci Kessinger (Mike) and
DeAnne Spencer (Cody) both of Hays, Kansas; siblings: Verlene Wilson of WaKeeney, JD Schoenberger (Georgette) of Butte, N.M., Phyllis Steiben (Gene) of Colorado Springs, Martin Schoenberger (Carolyn), Wayne, Mary Jo McCoy (Bob), Kevin Schoenberger (Tracey), and Gerard Schoenberger (Amy) all of WaKeeney, Kansas; sister-in law, Peggy Schoenberger of Russell, Kansas; grandchildren, Megan Schoenberger and Caleb, Zach, and Bethany Pearson, Seth and Matthew Greener, and Trevor
Sutter; Stepgrandchildren, Abram, Leo, and Elihu; great-grandchildren, Graysan and Quinntan.
He was preceded in death by his parents, Victor and Lydia Schoenberger; and brothers, Kenny and Jim Schoenberger.
Visitation was 5 to 7 p.m., with Vigil and Rosary following at Christ the King Catholic Parish Center in WaKeeney, Feb. 10.
A Mass of Christian Burial will be held at 11 a.m., today (Feb. 11) at the Christ The King Catholic Church in WaKeeney. Lunch will follow at the V.F.W. Post 3449.
