Football fans watching the televised Super Bowl national football championship game Sunday afternoon were surprised when a commercial sponsored by the makers of Jeep motor vehicles included video shot last week in this area.
The commercial also explained why strange vehicles were observed in Smith Center and traveling Smith County roads.
The advertisement featured the geographic center of the 48 contiguous states as the center of the Re-United United States of America.
The chapel associated with the monument was featured in the two-minute commercial.
In a voiceover, Bruce Springsteen used the U.S. Center Chapel as a symbol for unity. He encouraged Americans to meet in the middle.
Springsteen appeared in the commercial entering the tiny chapel and sitting on one of its pews lighting a candle.
The commercial also included rural and urban landscapes. The commercial was shot over 5 days in late January and included a 1965 Willys CJ-5 Jeep and a 1980 CJ-5 Jeep. This year marks the 80th anniversary of the introduction of the Jeep. A fact sheet indicated in addition to the chapel, motel, porch and landscape pictures were shot in the Lebanon area. Other landscapes were shot at Oronoque, Kansas, Golden, Colorado, Denver, Red Cloud and Hastings. Oronoque is an unincorporated community 10 miles southwest of Norton, Kansas. Founded in 1885, the down was the western terminus for a Burlington railroad branch line. The Lockland Country Club at Hastings catered meals for the crew filming the commercial.
