Country Roads

No, I do not have a New Year’s Resolution. I am just thankful to get beyond 2020 and into 2021. Now what’s to say 2021 will be any better? I don’t have an answer for that question but it’s at times like this it would be good to be able to see a little beyond and into the future.

The closest I came to being able to see into the future was years ago when I was a sophomore at Burr Oak High School. Every year a high school carnival was held in the school’s gym. We all had such fun preparing for that carnival. I can’t remember how it was done but we were assigned our duties. There were the basket ball shoots, dart throwing, the duck tank where children drew out prized marked ducks. Other happenings were a cake walk, a coin toss booth, but the most fun and sought after assignment was to be in on the Spook House. The Spook House was set up down in the gym’s basement where the boys’ locker rooms were.

My assignment was to work along with a senior girl, in a booth featuring fortune tellers. It was fun dressing up as a Gypsy girl. The senior had done this before so she filled me in on all the info on palm reading technics. Of course, there was a “crystal” ball placed on a table where the fortunes were told after waving our hands over it and looking deep into the glass.

The night of the carnival the gym was filled with families, from little ones who could hardly walk to grandpas and grandmas. All purchased their tickets at the door to enjoy the carnival options inside the decorated gym. Balloons were handed out as people walked in. Ice cream and popcorn booths were set up in a corner. The longest line was always in place at the top of the basement stairway, where a masked character took tickets, as another spooky looking person appeared to take a group at a time down into the Spook House.

The senior girl and I took turns at the fortune telling booth, throughout the night. Everyone who came into the booth seemed impressed by our predictions but then again, our predictions were always good ones with a positive out look. What fun we had!

As a former fortune teller, this new year, 2021, is predicted to be a good one. Hopefully we can have a positive outlook.
