Don Johnson

Donald C. Johnson, 90, the son of Ruben and Ruth (Lervold) Johnson, was born Oct. 9, 1930, in Buffalo, Kan., and died Dec. 26, 2020, at Jewell County Hospital, Mankato.

Don moved with his family at an early age to Scandia, Kan., where he grew up and attended the local public schools, graduating from Scandia High School. Following his graduation, he served with the United States Army from 1951 until 1953, serving in Korea. He later served with the US Army Reserves until his honorable discharge in 1957.

Don was united in marriage to Norma E. Ross on Aug. 2, 1953. He began farming north of Formoso where the couple made their home. Don also was a farmhand and worked at the Mankato Livestock Commission Company for many years. The couple moved to Mankato in 2004.

Don was a member of the American Legion in Jewell and the VFW in Mankato.

He was preceded in death by his son, Jerry Don Johnson in 1974; and his wife, Norma Johnson, in 2012.

Survivors include one son, Tony A. (Katherine) Johnson of Smithfield, Va .; one daughter, Deanna L. (Mitchell) Snell of Concordia; several grandchildren and great-grandchildren; one great-great-grandchild; one sister, Peggy (Delbert) Tholstrup of Salina; other relatives and friends.

A graveside service for the public will be held at 2 p.m., today, Thursday, Dec. 31, at the Balch Cemetery, rural Formoso.

Interment will follow the services.

Visitation was noon until 6 p.m. on Wednesday, Dec. 30, at the Bachelor-Surber Funeral Home, Belleville (the family was not present).
