The first Christmas tree lighting in Mankato occurred Saturday in the city park.
Mayor Justin Schoonover and the city council thanked the Jewell County Community Foundation and the Greater Salina Foundation who made this event possible with the support of the Mankato city council.
Councilman Neil Becker, dressed as Santa, drove a Farmall tractor around the park led by John Deere lawnmowers as his reindeer.
City administrator Barry Parsons and councilman Chris Klos rode on a trailer which was attached to Santa's Farmall. They passed out candy to the children in attendance.
Elves helped pass out coffee and cocoa to the large crowd.
Candy, toys, hot chocolate and coffee were donated by Mark Turner from Hastings. The cookies were homemade and provided by Kay Parsons, Jill Klos and Mary Lou Becker. Community members, the Boy Scouts and Girl Scouts donated many of the ornaments that adorned the 21 foot Christmas tree. The containers for dispensing hot chocolate and coffee were provided by The Buffalo Roam. Moonlight Workshop, LLC provided the sound and music for this ceremony.
