Hershberger honored

Ron Hershberger was recognized as Superior Public Schools teacher of the quarter, Monday evening at the Superior Board of Education meeting. Hershberger began his Superior teaching career in 1987 and has taught high school chemistry, physics and physical science for the past 34 years. He currently coaches cross country and track. In the past he has coached football and been a class sponsor.

He is an active member of the Grace Community Evangelical Free Church and is an active supporter of school events. He was nominated by the Liebel family who wrote the following on his nomination:

“Mr. Hershberger teaches, coaches, guides and encourages students in and outside the classroom. He encourages them to take upper level classes in high school to prepare them for college, and once in college, they have voiced how prepared they feel in the classroom compared to other students because of what they were taught in his class.

“Our sons participated in track and cross country because he is the coach. He speaks with them individually after each event regardless of how they perform and encourages them to work towards and reach their personal goals. Mr. Hershberger is a positive role model in the classroom and community and we are lucky to have him in our school.”

Matt Sullivan, board president, presented Hershberger with a golden apple and invited him to speak. Hershberger said, “I was surprised when Supt. Kobza approached me and told me I would be recognized as teacher of the quarter. We have many good teachers here.

“I enjoy my job and have a great group of students with whom I have related with throughout the years. As I look across the board members, I have had at least half of you in class and now I am teaching the second generation of students.”

Doug Hoins, elementary principal, said, “I have a daughter in her second year of college. In chemistry I, she reported lots of other students were struggling with things we had under Mr. Hershberger half way through the year.”
