David Hibbs Sr, 59, of Kearney, died Thanksgiving Day, Nov. 26, at the Kearney Regional Hospital. His funeral was held at 11 a.m. Saturday at the Mason Funeral Home in Winner, S.D. Burial followed in the Winner City Cemetery. Visitation was held from 5 to 7 p.m. Friday at the funeral home.
David Alan Hibbs was born May 13, 1961, in Hastings. He was raised in Superior and graduated Superior High School in 1979. He married Sheryl Marie Carpetner on Aug. 9, 1980. He adopted Sheryl’s daughter, Jennifer Renae Hibbs on June 1st, 1980. A son, David Alan Hibbs, Jr., was born on Jan, 28, 1981. Another son, Jason Lynn Hibbs, was born on June 26, 19833.
He became a law enforcement officer on Aug. 19, 1982, in Guymon, Okla. A back injury, suffered while he was arresting a suspect, ended his career as a cop on Aug. 19, 1982, in Guymon. He retired and was on disability until his death.
Survivors include his daughter, Jennifer Renae Hibbs (Alex); two sons, David Alan Hibbs Jr., and Jason Lynn Hibbs (Maggie); grandchildre Jaymee HIbbs Birtney Hibbs, Dylan Hibbs, Aclyunn Osterbuhr, Aayden Hibbs, Daietlynn Anderson and Chloe Blakn; one sister, Lori Fennell; and his parents. Donald and Marleen Hibbs.
He was preceded in death by his ex-wife, Sheryl Marie Hibbs; grandparents, George and Alice Hibbs, Ben Vavra and his first wife, Goldie Vavra and second wife, Margaret Vavra; and Merle Duane Vavra.
