New attendance guidelines for high school winter sports

The COVID-10 pandemic has wreaked havoc with traditional high school sports attendance practices. New policies are in effect for the winter sports season.

Both Superior and Lawrence-Nelson High Schools are following the guidelines issued by the Nebraska School Activities Association.

Each school in the association was given the option to participate or not participate in the 2020-2021 winter sports season.

The attendance policy is one of the biggest changes. Only two family members (family members must live in the same household as the participant) per athlete will be allowed to attend. All family members attending must be on a pass list (Superior High School) prior to the event. Lawrence-Nelson spectators are limited to the immediate family members of the particpating athlete who live in the same household.

Superior fans must sit in the north bleachers while visiting fans must sit in the south bleachers.

There will be only pre-packaged food available at concession stands.

All spectators must wear masks at all times and practice social distancing.

Spectators are asked to leave the building, without congregating in the gym or other parts of the building as soon as possible following the completion of the contest.

Coaches and non-active participants are required to wear face coverings at all times. All participating schools, officials, judges and spectators are expected to adhere to these requirements.

Basketball contests cancelled because of COVID-19 issues will not have wild card points awarded.

There are protocols in place for the basketball teams during games. The pregame protocol limits attendees to the referee and head coach from each team with individuals maintaining a social distance of six feet or greater. No handshakes and fist bumps.

The officials table personnel are required to wear face coverings.

Pre and post game ceremonies eliminate handshakes and fist bumps. The same protocol applies to the postgame hand shaking.

Players may wear face coverings. Hand sanitizer will be provided by the host team at the scorers table. Coaching staff and other non-active bench personnel, including players, must wear masks.

Officials may wear long-sleeved shirts. Electronic whistles are allowed. Face coverings and gloves are permissible for officials.

Officials may stand six feet or greater from player making a throw-in and bounce the ball to that player on a front court throw-in.

The lead official may stand on the end line, for free throws, and bounce the ball to the free thrower.

The wrestling guidelines and protocols have also changed.

Team and individual contest limitations has changed to 18 total completion dates.

Weigh-ins will be completed by teams rather than shoulder-to-shoulder.

Wrestlers are required to wear a face covering when in the weigh-in area. Shaking hands with officials and with the opposing coach has been eliminated. Officials will not raise the winner's hand. Officials can wear face coverings but are not required. Flip disc should be caught by official rather than hitting the mat.

Coaches and all workers must wear face coverings at all times. When not competing, wrestlers are required to wear face masks and social distance in the designated area for their team.

Hand sanitizer and disinfectant wipes available at each scorers table.

These guidelines and requirements remain in effect until further notice from the NSAA.
