Editor's Notebook

Miniseters have long asked people to remember the true meaning of Christmas but it hard to combat the commercialization of the holiday. While we try to maintain some degree of normal, this year all holidays are different. Earlier this week, a friend emailed me a letter from Santa Claus. I’m not sure who wrote the letter. Melanie Mainqusit may have for she sent it to me for inclusion in the Courtland Journal, a newspaper published by her father, Bob Mainquist.

The letter addresses much of the uncertainty surrounding this year’s Christmas season and contains a timely message. It follows:

Dear boys and girls,

I believe some of you are worried I may not make it to your home this Christmas Eve because of the COVID virus. Please don’t worry, I have clearance from every country and the reindeer and I are all fit and well. Mrs. Claus is making sure I take my vitamins.

Due to all the restrictions in the workplace some of my elves have not been able to help in my workshop. We cannot get all the materials to produce all the toys you have asked for. We are working as hard as we can, but some toys will not be ready.

If you do not get everything you asked for, it is not because you haven’t been good, in fact you have all behaved so well during these tough times. It is because unfortunately I can’t have all the toys you asked for by Christmas. Some of you may get what you asked for, but if your sister, brother, or friend doesn’t, please be kind to them as I know they will be disappointed.

Everyone will get presents and if it’s not exactly what you asked for, I hope you understand. So stay safe, keep up the good work, wear your mask and keep washing your hands and I will see you all on Christmas Eve (but you’ll be asleep so you won’t see me!) Tell your grownups to share this message with their friends so everyone knows I will be at their home for Christmas.

Love always,

Santa
