Before Thanksgiving break, the Superior Junior High Girls basketball team tackled three games in seven days to remain undefeated on the season. The Cats took to the road for a Tuesday night match-up against the Thayer Central Titans. Superior came out with a vengeance and never let up, defeating the Titans 55 to 10. Halle Bargen led all scorers and posted a season personal best 22 points. Sadie Cornell had another solid night, putting 14 points on the board including six of six free-throw attempts. Mia Gardner chipped in six points. Faith Butler was good for five points, including a high flying, 3-point buzzer beater to end the half. Rayne Biltoft and Ariana Heusinkvelt each added a bucket for the Cats.
Superior hosted the Bruning-Davenport-Shickley Eagles in their first home game of the year two days later. The Cats shut out the Eagles in the first quarter 8-0, expanded their lead in the second quarter to 14-2, held BDS to seven points in the second half, and went on to win 38 to 11. Two extra quarters were played. BDS scored a bucket with little time on the clock to put the Eagles up by one. Superior’s Ariana Heusinkvelt turned around and hit a buzzer beater of her own as time expired to top the Eagles.
It was back to the highway for Superior, traveling north to take on the Lawrence-Nelson Raiders on Monday afternoon. The Cats again got off to a good start, out scoring L-N 10-2 in the first quarter, expanded their lead at the half, 19-4. L-N made a run of their own in the fourth quarter, but Superior came out with the 25-16 victory. It was a team effort, with all 11 Wildcats available for the game seeing action on the court. Sadie Cornell led all scorers with 13, with eight of those coming in the first quarter. Cornell’s quick feet and hands led to a number of steels for the Cats. Mia Gardner had several takeaways of her own that led to fast break scores. Halle Bargen was good for five points. Faith Butler, Cora Schnakenberg, and Ariana Heusinkvelt each scored two. Jordan Duncan was fouled on the shot, and sunk a free throw for the Cats.
Superior’s next game is at home against Sutton on Thursday Dec. 3.
