Burr Oak

David and Lori Barnes, Smith Center, visited Cliff and Glenny Barnes last Wednesday and took them out for lunch. David was doing some electrical work for his parents.

Wand Frasier attended a rally and cruise Friday in McPherson for President Donald Trump. Wanda reported there were more than 100 vehicles. They cruised for almost an hour through and around McPherson. On Saturday, Wanda attended the Trump rally and cruise at Hastings, at the sports complex near Walmart. The cruise departed from the complex at 2 p.m. and went from Hastings to Kennesaw and through several other small towns in route to Grand Island and the Interstate. Then they headedback to Hastings. There were more than 200 vehicles cruising Burlington in support of President Donald Trump. Wanda reported a good time and enjoyed having her son, Josh; grandson, Luke; and granddaughter, Emma, all of Hastings, accompanying her on the cruise. Afterwards they met Amanda and Sophia Frasier for supper at a restaurant in Hastings.

Saturday evening there were more vehicles on Main Street than usual. The reason for the extra vehicles was the Burr Oak Community Club sponsored Halloween Trunk or Treat event which lasted from 5 to 6 p.m. The event was a first for the community and was in response to the social distancing required because of the Coronavirus pandemic. Fourteen vehicles were decorated by their owners to welcome youngsters, and a few not so young, came to enjoy the nice, though windy, evening. Besides the local residents who were passing out candy, the local bank representative had treat bags for the children. The Community Club had cans of soda and bags of chips for each one who stopped by their table. There was a fall display where interested families could take pictures of their costumed children. It was a fun evening for everyone.

David and Lori Barnes visited his parents, Cliff and Glenny Barnes, on Saturday evening after the Trunk or Treat event and took home one of their young kittens.

Amy Cox from Courtland came to the Burr Oak Trunk and Treat to help pass out candy and then stayed for dinner at Gary and Penny Turner’s afterwards.

Pastor Rod Rose opened the morning worship with the announcements. The United Methodist Church fall dinner will be held from 11 to 1:30 p.m. Nov. 8 at the Burr Oak Community Center. Carry out will be available and sanitizing will be requested.

The Call to Worship was Psalm 42:1-3, 11 and was read by the congregation. Following the greeting time, joys and concerns were shared. Prayers continue for Tammy Nelson, Dave Anderson, Pastor Ellis and those suffering from the COVID virus. Pastor Rose brought the message from Matthew. He explained everything boils down to pride which we all seem to suffer from. Human nature just always wants to be right. Fellowship time was hosted by the church.

“What Makes a Saint” was the title of Pastor Richard Cox’s message at the Burr Oak Christian Church on Sunday morning. His selected scripture reading was Luke 6:20-31. Pastor Cox began his message with a story about a little boy who asks his father about the people depicted in the colorful church windows. The father tells him the people are saints. When the boy asks what saints are, the father is at a loss for more explanation. Then the little boy answers his own question by saying, “I know what they are! Saints are the people that the light shines through.” Saints are followers of Jesus. They are real people, but though saints, they still are far from perfect. We are all flawed because we are human. We accept Christ as our Savior and we allow Him to change us even if only a little bit at a time. We are set apart from the world, dedicated to letting Christ lead our lives. True happiness comes when we rely on God because we are more dedicated to Jesus. We are to let Christ’s light shine through us. A saint is someone through whom God’s story is told.

On Sunday afternoon, Cliff and Glenny went to Red Cloud to watch their great-grandson, Thomas Ord, participate in the last youth football game of the season. The Red Cloud fifth and sixth grade boys’ team played the team from Blue Hill. Unfortunately, the Red Cloud team was again defeated by this team as they had played them with a similar finish for the first game of the season. The Red Cloud team finished the season with a 2 win 2 loss record.

Kyle Ord, Red Cloud, was a visitor of Cliff and Glenny Barnes on Monday afternoon. Kyle had been called to Burr Oak on a job related issue and stopped by to say hello to his grandparents.

Work has begun on getting the new street signs put up around town. The new signs were made available through a grant and local donations.

The Northbranch Friend Church will be hosting the Community Thanksgiving service at 7 p.m., Sunday evening, Nov. 22. All are welcome to attend.
