Sunday is the 27th annual National Family Literacy Day! The day was designated in 1994 by a joint resolution of the 103rd Congress of the United States. Celebrated every year since, the event kicks off National Literacy Month.
This year Desire Tobey Sears Chapter NSDAR is joining with the Jewell Public Library to promote the event. Both encourage area families to ReadWriteThink on Sunday, and then keep reading during the entire month.
Why Literacy Day? The most important determinent of a child's language and emergent literacy is parental involvement. The more parents (grandparents too!) are involved with reading, writing, talking and thinking with children, the stronger their children's language and literacy skills. Success in reading ripples into success in other academic areas.
So many different things to do to ReadWriteThink. Recite a poem, write a new poem, retell a fairy tale, read a picture book, read the first chapter of a book and keep reading a chapter each day during National Literacy Month.
Involve all members of the family, each can read a part of the book (or poem) then pass it to the next family member. Use technology – video a child reading a book and send it to a family member. Have a Zoom reading event or use Skype, Facetime or YouTube.
The Jewell Public Library is supporting literacy with their fall storytime sessions held at 4:30 p.m., each Thursday from now until Dec. 17. The sessions are designed for young readers – ages three to five. On Oct. 29, the session is called "Dr. Seuss's What Was I Scared Of?" followed by "The Great Turkey Race" on Nov. 5.
A special event on Nov. 19, finds the Jewell Public Library hosting author, Rosie Eilert Bosse! Bosse grew up on a farm west of Jewell and graduated from Jewell High School with the Class of 1974. She will be the special storyteller at the 4:30 p.m. fall storytime session but will be at the library from 2 p.m. to 7 p.m. with her children's picture books and adult novels.
Bosse plans to have eight picture books available, including her new ones Curly and the Terrible Tornado and What Does Old Santa Do? Then "if all goes well" South of Laramie, the third novel in her series, will be available! Keep the date in mind and join in the fun at the Jewell Public Library on Nov. 19.
The Jewell Library is open on Monday from 2 p.m. to 6 p.m., Tuesday from 2 p.m. to 7 p.m., Wednesday from 2 p.m. to 5 p.m., Thursday from 2 p.m. to 6 p.m. and Friday from 1 p.m. to 5 p.m. The library is closed on Saturday and Sunday.
Jewell County has five public libraries. The Jewell Public Library, the Mankato City Library, the Formoso Public Library, the Burr Oak Community Library and the Randall Public Library. Each has a Facebook page with information about hours and events.
