VB team hit by COVID...

"A bit of trouble and hardship builds character" so the old saying goes.

But then, how much character do you need?

The 2020 L-N Lady Raiders got struck again by the COVID-19 pandemic. After giving up a number of games earlier in the season, they had to give up playing the Twin Valley Conference tournament which started last weekend.

Earlier in the week they played Blue Hill to an almost stand-still before dropping the game 2-3. L-N also came up on the short end of the score in a home triangular with BDS and High Plains.

The game summaries:

L-N – BLUE HILL: 25-23, 20-25, 23-25, 25-22, 11-15: Small town volleyball at its best . . . except for the L-N fans, the wrong team won. The annual match with neighboring Blue Hill was held in Nelson last week and it was a game worth watching for exciting volleyball.

The 2 – 3 set loss was hard for the Raider fans, but the game was interesting to watch. The summary:

Set No. 1: The opening set appeared to be a Raider victory right from the start. L-N pounded down a lot of kills and BH suffered a number of hitting errors. L-N led 21-10 at one point. The Raiders had a series of hitting errors as well and the set was tied at 23-23 before L-N won their only volley of the set for the 24th point and a BH net ball gave L/N the first set victory.

Set No. 2: Blue Hill had only a few ace serves in this set, but they came a vital points in the set. Unlike the first set, there was only one long volley in this set. There was only a two point difference in the score until late in the set when BH managed a 4-0 scoring run.

Set No. 3: L-N opened the set with a 6-0 scoring run with points coming from several ace serves, an ace block and a Raider kill. BH went on their own seven point scoring run and tied the score at 15-15. In the end of the set the score was tied six time and BH won four of five long volleys to win the set.

Set No. 4: Win, or end the game. Talk about a close set. This set saw: • scored tied 14 times; • score changed hands five times; • no scoring runs longer than three points and that happened only once; • only two ace serves in the game, one by each team. L-N trailed 21-22 before the Raiders came up with four straight kill to ice the win.

Set No. 5: This set was close the whole time until BH managed a four point scoring run very near the end thanks to several Raider hitting errors. Both teams played well at times and both had some errors.
