Jewell’s history: On June 8, 1874, Lodge No. 116 I.O.O.F. was chartered at Jewell. Samuel F. Burdett, special deputy grand master, assisted by W. H. McDonald of Cawker City Lodge No. 87, organized the Jewell chapter.
The following charter members composed the organization: Samuel Porter, Wm. H. Record, M. V. Price, H. C. Jennings, D. H. Bloom, and C. C. Reynolds. At the same time the visiting cards of Wm. H. Cameron, J. R. Scroggs, and John Hoffer Lodge No. 372, Orangeville, Ill., were presented and the bearers admitted to the lodge.
H. C. Jennings was elected to the office of N. G.; W. H Record, V.G.; Samuel Porter, R.S.; D. H. Bloom, Treasurer. J. W. George, Frank L. Pound, W. H. Van Horn and J. A. Scarbrough were admitted to the lodge by ballot, and J. A. Scarbrough was elected to the office of Permanent Secretary.
After a long discussion, the I.O.O.F. lodge appointed a building committee on April 30, 1878. The committee was composed of Geo. S. Christ, J. W. George, and I. R. Shelden.
Coming up in November the Jewell Community Youth Group will be having a soup dinner at the Community Center from 11 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. on Nov. 8.
Today, Oct. 22, government commodities will be distributed at 1 p.m., at the Jewell Apartments.

Piper McMillan has a new pet. She has a pet pig named Charlotte. Saw on Facebook that Jerod took the pig to work with him, and the residents of the Downs Nursing Home enjoyed seeing Charlotte also.
The Ionia Methodist Church will have an executive board meeting after morning worship Sunday.
Remember Operation Christmas Child. Pastor Jim Rice is the collections coordinator for Jewell County. Boxes will be filled and collected at Harmony United Methodist Church and then taken to the regional collection center in Salina. Collection week is Nov.16 to 22. Contact him for more information.
Sympathy is extended to the Shawn Newell family in their recent loss.
Recent visitors in the Crouse home have been Glen McClure, Mary Shelton, Michael Seamans, Sherry Koster and Jane Pahls. Jane brought Billi Becky, a pet chicken, to see Rachel. The chicken is calm and sat on Rachel. She is on a leash and has a diaper.
The next Jewell County Men’s Prayer Breakfast will be at 7 a.m. on Nov. 7 at the Jewell Christian Church.
Ashlyn Loomis and the junior high Lady Trojans were volleyball league champions! Congratulations to all!!
The Food Pantry needs for October are chili beans and peas, plus men’s and teen’s size socks for the Tree of Warmth.
