In 2020, Jewell’s Sesquicentennial Year, the annual Corn Show has added a couple of new events. One will be the First Annual Cornhole Tournament and the other is a demonstration of Cowboy Action Shooting by Jewell native, Travis Cady.
Cornhole players will be competing on the north side of Maag Park at noon, Saturday, Oct. 10. Gaye Daniels, one of the Corn Show’s organizers, said the event “seemed a good fit” for this year’s event. The tournament will follow American Cornhole Association Rules.
On the 10th, teams (two members each) will compete in the tournament. For more information contact Daniels at 785-545-6141. Interested competitors must contact Daniels by Wednesday, Sept. 30.
Travis Cady, a 1998 graduate of Jewell High School, has been involved with Cowboy Action Shooting for about ten years. He is glad to have this opportunity to demonstrate what the sport is all about. Cady is the only person in the area participating in the sport and yes, he would “like to get more people involved.”
As an active participant in Cowboy Action Shooting, Cady belongs to SASS or Single Action Shooting Society and his chapter is in Chapman. Cady’s alias in the sport is Major Art Tillery. Check the “tongue-in-check” play on “major artillery.” All sport participants have an alias and many are a play on words though others may have a historical or family connection. A couple of Cady’s friends are “Little Dilly” and “Stirrup Trouble.”
At 1:30 p.m., on Saturday the 10th Cady’s demonstration will be on the east side of Jewell’s Maag Park in the empty lot between the Guarantee State Bank and the Hair Den. As all SASS members participate in period dress, Cady will be appropriately costumed. Though the demonstration will be done with blanks and balloons, observers need to be prepared for some noise.
There will be lots to do during the 2020 Corn Show – including new events Cowboy Action Shooting and a Cornhole Tournament! Remember to #JoinUsInJewell! “We’ve Got A Story To Tell”!
