The Superior High School gymnasium was the setting for the presentation of the Gatorade Nebraska Girls Track and Field Athlete of the year award to Kalynn Meyer. The ceremony was conducted during the Wildcats volleyball match with Bruning-Davenport-Shickley.
The Gatorade Company is in its 35th year of honoring the nation's best high school athletes. The company announced Meyer as its 2019-2020 Gatorade Nebraska Girls Track and Field Athlete of the Year.
The award, which recognizes not only outstanding athletic excellence, but also high standards of academic achievement as well as exemplary character demonstrated on and off the field, distinguishes Meyer as Nebraska's best high school track and field athlete. The state's two-time returning Gatorade Track and Field Athlete of the Year, and six-foot-three senior, concluded her prep track career as a three-time Lincoln Journal Star Prep Athlete of the Year as well as a two-time Omaha World Herald Athlete of the Year. Meyer set a state record at the 2019 Outdoor Class C state meet in the discus with a throw of 176'8", which ranked as the nation's number 18 distance in prep history. She also broke the Class C record in the shot put, launching the shot 49'5" to produce the nation's number three mark in the spring of 2019.
Meyer has maintained an A average in the classroom. She will compete on an athletic scholarship, for volleyball, at the University of Nebraska-Lincoln when the program resumes.
