Older adults who live alone can be at risk of feeling lonely or isolated. The older adults in our community may be more vulnerable to those feelings as we continue to face the challenges of a pandemic. Nora Rhoades, youth development agent, encourages Post Rock District 4-H members to "Adopt an older adult" and discover the value in developing a friendship with an older adult. Our older generation has a lot to offer us. As Sara Grout, social worker for Senior Life Enrichment said, "There's a great opportunity to learn and grow both ways if we can help people make those connections."
Ideas for building connections include making a craft, dropping off a wellness bag, calling via a virtual phone app, running errands, or sharing everyday happenings. Post Rock Extension District can help 4-H members and other youth in our community connect with an older adult.
Contact Nora Rhoades if you would like to start a friendship with an older adult or if you are an older adult interested in making a new friend. Nora can be reached at the Mankato Office by calling 785-378-3174.
