On Aug. 10, Jewell County Commissioners Mark Fleming, Steve Greene and Keith Roe met as the board of county canvassers, to canvass the ballots from the Aug. 4 primary election. Carla Waugh, Jewell County clerk and election officer, was also present.
Waugh reviewed the election night tabulation and the advance ballot count that was received after election night. She then reviewed the 28 provisional ballots and the reason for being provisional. Waugh went over the guidelines in the Kansas Election Standards Chapter 3 that provides guidelines for each situation and whether the ballot should be counted.
The commissioners agreed 24 provisional ballots should be counted and four deemed invalid for counting. The special counting board opened and counted the provisional ballots with Josh Ney, Kathy Ungerer and Beth Salmon as observers. The special counting board tallied the votes and Waugh presented them to the board of canvassers for review.
The ballots for the primary election were canvassed with 28 provisional ballots revied and 24 deemed valid and counted.
