Country Roads

We are getting closer to fall as August draws to a close. August is not one of my favorite months of the year. I guess it’s because of the hot days, knowing it’s the end of summer and winter awaits. Some interesting facts about August are it’s the only month in the English language that has a man’s given name. It’s the only month without an American holiday. August 2020 has five Saturdays, five Sundays and five Mondays. The month was named in honor of a Roman Emperor Augustus. August offers two birthstones, the Peridot and the Spinel, and the birth flowers of this month are Gladiolus and Poppies.

A positive side of August is most stores offer the “End Of Summer Specials.” There are two important birthdays in our family, and we have numerous friends who celebrate their birthdays this month.

I should be looking forward to my favorite time of the year, the fall as the month of August ends. The first day of Fall will soon arrive. I keep asking myself, “Where did the summer go?”

This time of the year is an exciting one. Schools begin, though this year will be “one of a kind” with the COVID virus still remaining and all the precautions in place. There is the back to school shopping done for supplies and for the replacement of the outgrown clothes and shoes. There is last minute garden canning done. If one is really ambitious, there is the beginning of fall cleaning which can be done in preparation for a fall garage sale. The milo fields are turning colors with the heads becoming brown. The soybean fields are yielding pods and along with the corn fields, will soon be ready for harvest. Farmers are getting combines ready for the harvest.

Memories of Augusts in the past would be about the children and teens anxious for school to start. We’d be wondering what the teacher would be like, and the “can’t wait” feeling of seeing school friends once again. It is a time of new beginnings. The last week in August, just before school started was usually when my father was finished with his custom wheat harvesting up north and was caught up on his own farm work. My family would load up our car and off we’d go for a three day vacation to Colorado. Father always believed he couldn’t be gone from home longer that three days, with the farm work and checking on the livestock, but we sure enjoyed those three days together.

Maybe you’re sad to see August go, or maybe you’re like me and are ready for the month to leave. Here’s praying for nice fall weather ahead, and a safe and happy school year.
