With the start of the high school sports season at hand, fans of the Superior Public Schools have been asking about the rules they will have to follow this year.
On Tuesday Supt. Marty Kobza released the initial guidelines that will be followed. As the COVID-19 situation is being monitored closely, it is possible the rules in place today, will be changed tomorrow. but for now this is these are the rules.
Using current DHM mandates: the football field seating will be limited to 75 percent of capacity with at least 6 feet distancing between family groups.
The stadium seating capacity at 75 percent is 1,000.
The available seating was figured at 75 percent of capacity minus coaches, players, officials, game. The number is not the priority. However, once 1,000 fans have entered the facility access will be denied to anyone else wanting to enter.
Home seating will be on east side of the field and will include the hillside.
Masks are encouraged and 6 foot social distancing between groups will be required. Family groups must sit with each other and all students must sit with their family group.
Visitor seating will be in the west bank of bleachers.
Masks will be encouraged.
While there will be no band performances, the drill team may perform if social distancing is maintained.
There will be no student section and fans will not be allowed on the field or sidelines either before or after games. Extra meal functions and activities like cake raffles will not be permitted.
Concessions workers must wear masks and gloves. No community condiments. Only water, pop and prepackaged food will be available.
Rules for using the gymnasium will be similar.
Using current DHM mandates: the gym will be limited to 50 percent of capacity while maintaining 6-foot distancing between family groups.
Since the high school gym seating capacity is 1,250, the available seating is figured at 50 percent capacity minus coaches, players, officials and game staff, Once 500 fans have entered the facility, access will be denied to anyone else wanting to enter.
Home seating will be on the north bank of bleachers with the stage used when needed.
Home crowd will enter and exit using the northeast gym entrance.
Masks will be encouraged and 6 -foot social distancing between family groups required. All students must sit with their family group.
Visitor seating will be on the south bank of bleachers. Visitors will enter and exit using the southeast gym entrance. The same seating rules will apply to both the home fans and visitors.
There will not be a pep band or student section. Fans will not be allowed on the gym floor before or after games, No one will be allowed to sit in the first rows or within two rows of players’ bench and scorers’ table.
There will be no extra meal fundraisers. Concession workers must wear masks and gloves, Only water, pop and prepackaged food will be available.
The varsity football team has a pre-season scrimmage planned for 6:30 p.m. Friday on Brodstone Memorial Field. Regular season play begins the following Friday at Centennial. The first home game will be with Fairbury on Sept. 4.
The varsity volleyball team has a pre-season scrimmage at 5:30 Friday and will host a jamboree with Exeter-Milling on Monday.
