L-N fall sports begin

Covid-19 . . .

High School Sports . . .

As has been said many time so far this year of 2020 . . . it will be remembered for many thing caused by the Pandemic of the Covid-19 virus.

The impact on sports (high school, college and professional) may not be “the” most important item to be remembered about 2020, but that is one of the most noticeable change of the year.

However, after the cancelation of most sport activities in the spring, the fall sports are now in the spotlight. The impact varies. Most professional sports are being held, although with reduced schedules and fans. College sports for the fall have been stopped in areas and will continue in areas, again with changes. High school sports in Nebraska have been authorized to be held even though some school have decided to eliminate them.

For L/N and most “rural” schools, the season is about to begin. We plan on a little “pre-season” coverage, but it will have to wait until next week. However, a very brief summary follows:

Football: Football coach, Brian Blevins welcomes a total of 27 young men to the football program this season. The number is two higher than a year ago.

The season begins Friday, August 28 with a trip to High Plains High School. The first thing that is noticeable for this season is a schedule with names on it, football fans may not be as familiar with from past years. Names like Osceola, Arapahoe, Diller-Odell.

Coach Blevins and staff are busy working out player assignments and duties. They look for an interesting year and plan for another successful season.

Volleyball: As of today, we haven’t received information for the girls’ volleyball team. However, with the loss of a large senior class last year, we know we’ll see a lot of changes on the court this season.

We also know that the team has a good number of player coming back that know how to play volleyball. A number picked up a lot of valuable varsity experience last year. Last year’s JV players will add a lot of excitement as well.

The girls begin their season on Sept. 1.

Cross Country: Two girls and three boys will continue the L-N Co-operative Cross Country team with Sandy Creek. They are all juniors and seniors and expectations are high for a good year for the L-N students and the team as a whole.

The first competition is in Superior on Sept. 3.
