New disc golf course at Mankato City Park
For about the past year, Mason and Tycen Higer have wanted to have a disc golf course in Mankato. Working with their father, Dan Higer, they went to the city council and asked for permission to apply for a grant and put in a disc golf course at the Mankato City Park. The city not only granted them permission, but the city administrator took care of all the grant paperwork. He applied and received a grant through the Jewell County Foundation.
The Higers drew a map for the best placement of the baskets. For the last several months, Mason Higer has been playing the planned course several times a week and making adjustments where he believed they needed to be made. Last week, with all of the equipment in for the baskets, the Higers dug the holes and set the posts in concrete. Then they attached the baskets to the poles. They are still working on getting the throwing pads (T-pads) in place and plan to install a sign with a course map on it. Mason threw the first disc after the installation was complete.
