Kansas Gov. Laura Kelly said masks will be required in public statewide to help slow the spread of COVID-19.
The governor made the announcement during her Monday update from Topeka. The new mandate begins at 12:01 a.m. Friday.
“When the pandemic first hit, there was mixed messaging about masks. Now the evidence could not be clearer. Wearing a mask is not only safe but it is necessary to avoid another shutdown,” Governor Kelly said.
Under the order, most Kansans must wear masks in stores and shops, restaurants, and in any situation in which social distancing of 6 feet cannot be maintained, including outside.
Governor Kelly said her administration will issue specific guidance and will work with the state attorney general’s office to implement the policy.
Enforcement of the order will be at the local level.
Florida and South Carolina were also added to the travel quarantine list. Kansans who travel to either states on or after June 29 are asked to quarantine for 14 days.
