On Main Street in Formoso, an old limestone wall is getting a face lift. Old meaning at least 120 years old. Michael Hansen, Concordia, has reset building blocks, filled in mortar, and restored the foundation. The wall is part of the Formoso Thrift Shop which is housed in the former Formoso State Bank Building.
The first bank in the location opened on June 1, 1900. Throughout the years the facility has housed different banks, the Formoso State Bank, First National Bank and Formoso Bank. Whatever the name there was a bank in the location for more than 100 years. An insurance agency was in the building for a few years after the bank closed. When the agency closed, the owners donated the building to the City of Formoso. The Formoso Thrift Store opened there three years ago.
A much-appreciated Dane G. Hansen grant is being used to do the necessary repair work on the wall. Across the street, the Formoso Water Department building sports a new roof. The needed roof is also an example of a Dane G Hansen grant at work.
