Jewell History: Answer to last week’s question was F. B. Gifford and Wm. Chaney were the two men that constructed a telephone line from the office of the Chicago Lumber Co. to the store of J. D. Robertson. This week: What was the name of the theatre in early Jewell City?

Due to the unknowns of the coronavirus, the Jewell Alumni officers had decided to cancel the 2020 Jewell Alumni Banquet scheduled for May 23. Save the date of May 20, 2021 for next year, when this year’s 50-year class and next year’s will be honored. Please spread the word and not the virus.

Our sympathy to the Ronald Eugene Menhusen family. He passed away March 24, 2020, in Salina, KS. He was born Aug. 28, 1936 near Jewell, KS to Benard and Mildred Hitz Menhusen. He is survived by his wife, Linda of the home, his daughter, Jennifer Haddon of Mitchell, South Dakota, two grandsons, Joseph and Malachi Haddon, also of South Dakota and two brothers, Albert Menhusen of Wamego, KS, and Merlyn Menhusen of Beloit, and many nieces and nephews. Cremation was chosen. Services will be held at a later date. Burial will be in the Jewell City Cemetery, Jewell, KS. Kleppinger Funeral Home,

Jewell, KS, has charges of the arrangements.

The Jewell-Randall Community Good Friday services have been cancelled for this year.

The Jewell County Men’s Prayer Breakfast scheduled for April 4 has been cancelled. It has been re-scheduled for Saturday morning, May 2nd at the Jewell Christian Church at 7 a.m.

For those of you that have Facebook accounts, Roberta Holdren has a new rap out on the Hilltop Lodge Retirement Community Facebook page. She seems to writing a new rap, just every few days now.

The Jewell Public Library has new hours. They are open just one afternoon a week—for pickup of books, magazines, or DVD’s only. This on Monday only from 4-6 p.m.

The Jewell Chamber of Commerce will not meet on Monday, April 13. There is no scheduled meeting in May, so they hope to see you again in September.

The Jewell Library Genealogy room and the Jewell Palmer Museum will not be open for their Thursday hours until further notice.

Thanks to volunteers Becky Loomis, Shirley Varney, Kathy Wilson, Josie Wilson, and Carl Knarr, Maag Park is getting a spring cleaning. Looks good folks and thank you for your work.

The Jewell Christian Church services are live each week at 10:30 a.m., Sunday morning, on the Jewell Christian Church Facebook page. I understand the other pastors in Jewell are using the media also to keep their congregations worshiping on Sunday. Thank you to each one.

Arlan and Elva Folsom returned to their home in Jewell, recently. Welcome home to Jewell.

While you are staying at home, please remember to not touch your face, even if you have washed your hands! Seriously, the best things to do right now are to stay home, drink plenty of liquids, wash your hands and do not touch your face. Call friends and family on the phone, text or email. Keep in touch, just don’t touch!

Certainly hope the Methodist women reschedule their pie making workshop! I for one could use lessons. (This is Kerma, not Sharon. Sharon already can make pies!)
