Conservation service closes Nelson Office

The Natural Resources Conservation Service office in Nelson is now closed and not because of the coronavirus.

Services that were once provided by the Nelson field office have been relocated to the agency’s Clay Center, Neb., office.

The Clay Center office is normally open from 8 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. Monday through Friday though during the current COVID-19 crisis the hours may be different. The office is located 120 West Fairfield.

The Clay Center office also serves as the headquarters office for Janet Valasek, the district conservationist who supervises offices in Fairbury, Hastings and Hebron.

The Nelson building constructed to house the Farm Service Agency and Natural Resources Conservation Service offices was recently sold by the private owner to Nuckolls County. Nuckolls County has terminated the leases and plans to adapt the building for use by the sheriff’s department.

If a suitable location becomes available, the agency said it would consider re-establishing a Nelson office.
