Sunday is National Vietnam War Veterans Day. This national observance is to remember and thank all Vietnam War Veterans and their families for their service during the war.
First observed in 2012, National Vietnam War Veterans Day was made official with legislative action on March 28, 2017. On that day President Trump signed The Vietnam War Veterans Recognition Act of 2017. The act made the official day of observance March 29 of each year.
March 29 was selected because on March 29, 1973, the Military Assistance Command, Vietnam (MACV) was officially disbanded. All United States troops left the Republic of Vietnam.
Any and all service men and women who were in any branch of the United States military between Nov. 1, 1955 and May 15, 1975 are considered to be veterans of the Vietnam War. It does not matter in what location the veteran served.
There are some 6.4 million living Americans who are Vietnam Veterans. More than 54,000 service men and women were killed during the war and have their names engraved on the Vietnam Memorial in Washington, D.C.
Remember to thank a Vietnam Veteran on March 29. Another way to observe National Vietnam War Veterans Day is to fly the Stars and Stripes.
