The Jewell County Senior Center is participating in the National March for Meals Campaign held annually. The March for Meals campaign was established to recognize March 22, 1972 when President Richard Nixon signed into law a measure that amended the Older Americans Act of 1965. It established a national nutrition program for seniors 60 and older. Senior nutrition programs in Kansas provide nutritious meals to seniors throughout the state and provide a powerful socializing opportunity, which helps combat loneliness and isolation.
Volunteers are the backbone of our senior meal program, by delivering Meals on Wheels to homebound seniors, and to people with disabilities. They also assist by showing concern and attention to the welfare of seniors, and helping with various tasks at the senior center. Their assistance is especially appreciated!
To commemorate this campaign, the Senior Center has invited local elected officials and other guests to join community senior citizens, for a meal throughout the month of March. The Mankato Chamber of Commerce, and Jewell County Foundation will host their monthly meeting, and eat at the center as well. Local businesses have also been invited to receive meals. Anyone in the community can receive meals regardless of age. Seniors with an assessment can eat for $3.50 or a suggested contribution. Individuals under 60 are $5.25.
Please join us in honoring our Friendship Meals program, the seniors they serve and the volunteers who care for them. Our recognition of, and involvement in the national 2020 March for Meals campaign enriches our entire community, and helps end senior hunger in America. If you or a loved one could benefit in any way, feel free to contact us at 785-378-3385. Also, follow us on Facebook at Mankato Senior Center.
