Four Ways from Northbranch

One morning recently I was out and about running errands and stopped in at Tom Shute’s home office where he hosts a daily morning coffee for his hired men and whoever else happens to show up. This is the place to go to catch up on the neighborhood happenings as well as get a jump start to the day with coffee and whatever else may be prepared. That particular morning Ross Jeffery of Superior and neighborhood newcomer, Aaron Shute, were there to learn what the work plans were for the day. Seems to me Tom has a good thing going to get their work day organized. I believe they might have been extra careful with their conversations since I was there and, regardless of the subject, it just might get in the newspaper columns! Rightly so!

Aaron has joined the Shute Family Farm workers and lives west of his Uncle Tom. We welcome him to the neighborhood.

Word was received that Delbert Bird recently fell and had a partial hip replacement. A relative of his suggested that I put his address here so those who would like to bring a bit of cheer to him can send him a letter or card. Delbert Bird, Lancaster Rehab Center, 1001 South St., Lincoln, Neb. 68502, Rm. 238.

This weekend was busy for Red Cloud as the town was a buzz with honoring the life of Don Stratton, who was born near Invale and served in the Navy at Pearl Harbor on the USS Arizona. Don died Feb.15. A graveside service took place Monday at the Red Cloud Cemetery.

We are sorry to learn that Herb Jeffery is no longer responding to chemo treatments and is receiving care at their home in Wichita.

Saturday evening Ye Scribe did a bit of shopping in Red Cloud, going especially to patronize the “taco truck” that came to town in the early evening. After waiting a bit of lengthy time, my purchase was made and at the invitation of Jeri Shute we dined at her dining table. For me, the visit time was more enjoyable than the food! Jeri and I have been friends since our grade school days when we attended the same country grade school for a short time. As I recall two or three of the local country schools would get together and have spelling bees, with winners getting to go to Mankato for the big county wide spelling bee. Not always, but usually Jeri would outspell me and get to join the large ta-do at Mankato. But those were good ole days!

The first Sunday of each month the Harkness family is in charge of all the music for the worship service at Northbranch Friends. The monthly “noisy offering” is taken which is used for children’s projects thus the emphasis on children. Following the usual opening welcome, announcements and noted prayer concerns, Pastor Jon, wife Emily, Isaiah, Jacob, David and Ellie sang special numbers as Jon accompanied on his guitar. Serving as ushers were Brad Jeffery and Kelly McNichols.

“Making time for God” was the title of Pastor Jon’s message with scripture text from Mark 31. “Make” time – really? God is the one Who makes our time. Jesus came to show us how to live – to “Take” time. We need to daily replenish our mind with scripture reading and communicating with God so as to be used for God’s service. Just as an empty glass has nothing to give to quench our thirst, so it is if we do not daily replenish our thoughts, taking time to hear what God has to tell us. During the time of open worship, Colleen Jeffery helped Isaiah bring a colorful paper chain he had made during Sunday School which will be displayed in the sanctuary as a prayer chain reminder for people who need our prayers. A prayer of dismissal followed.

Remember the time change with lets us “spring forward” early Sunday morning.

Deep Thoughts...

So when is this “Old enough to know better” supposed to kick in?

Have you ever listened to someone for a while and wondered...”Who ties your shoelaces for you?”

I’m not lazy – I just really enjoy doing nothing.
