Ivan Gharring

Ivan Gharring, 97, of Sheridan, died Sunday, Feb. 16, 2020 at the Laurels of Carson City, Mich.

Born almost a century ago, Ivan saw many changes throughout his lifetime and he also witnessed many things come and go. However, during that same time two things remained the same and constant, Ivan’s work ethic and commitment. A person needs to look no further than his marriage of over 78 years to his wife Verleen as a shining example of his level of commitment and dedication. Ivan’s work ethic started when at the young age of 16, he not only graduated high school, but began his lifelong work as a farmer. For 60 plus years Ivan was an active Mason and for many years also a member of the Shriners.

Having been born and raised in Nebraska, Ivan was a diehard Nebraska Football fan! In his younger days, he liked being outdoors, hunting, fishing and golfing. Ivan also enjoyed playing cards with his friends and was a regular at the morning coffee shops. After his retirement, Ivan and Verleen traveled extensively throughout the US and Mexico in their RV and created lots of special memories.

Surviving Ivan is his wife, Verleen of Sheridan; daughter, DeeAnn (Bill) Piper of Sheridan; grandsons, Chad (Martha) Piper of Holt; Dr. Travis (Dr. Michelle) Piper of North Muskegon; great-grandchildren, Allie Piper; Tess Piper; Rem Piper all of Holt, Lindsey Piper and Eliza Piper both of North Muskegon and several nieces and nephews.

Ivan was preceded in death by his parents, Alfred and Aletha (Morehead) Gharring; son, Ladd Gharring and granddaughter, Nicole Rene Piper.

His funeral is being held at 2 p.m. Tuesday, Feb. 25, at Simpson Family Funeral Homes in Sheridan, Mich.,with Pastor Bob Braman and Rev. Madelyn Thompson officiating.
