Mankato Chamber plans sesquicentennial

Nine members of the Mankato Chamber of Commerce and one guest were present for the February meeting.

The chamber’s budget for 2020 was approved. The organization adapted the same budget that was used last year.

The membership drive was reported on. So far there are 20 members who have turned in forms. Membership forms will be mailed to the members who have not turned in submission forms. The deadline for form for members to remain on the website is March 1.

An update on the planning for the town’s 150th celebration was shared. A meeting was held to start the brainstorming process for the celebration on Jan. 29. There were a lot of ideas shared including a block party, parade, live entertainment, time capsule, road rally and other events to tentatively take place on Memorial Day Weekend of 2022. The next meeting with other organizations and members of the community will take place at 6 p.m., April 29 at Rock Hills High School.

Barry Parson, the new city administrator, shared with the chamber about the work the city is currently doing with adapting a seal for Mankato. The seal will be the backside of the coin from the centennial celebration.

Scholarship applications have been sent to the Rock Hills High School seniors. The deadline for the applications is April 1. Members will select the winners at the April monthly meeting.

The City Wide Clean Up and Community Garden were both briefly discussed. The Clean Up will take place April 25 this year. The garden plots will be ready for planting by late March. Both will be further discussed at next month's meeting.

Gretchen Staples, the NWKS regional coordinator for Rural and Remote was the guest speaker. She shared about the program to provide education for individuals looking for remote work. For more information, visit her website ruraland remote.org .
