SHS boys win then lose tourney opener

The Superior High School boys basketball team downed the Deshler Dragons, 55-51, at the high school gymnasium last Tuesday. They were edged 49-40 by Thayer Central in their opening round game of the Southern Nebraska conference Tournament at Hebron Monday.

Superior opened up a 26-17 lead over Deshler after two quarters of play. The team scored 19 points each in the third as Superior maintained its lead. The Wildcats held on in the fourth for their third win of the season as the Deshler comeback bid failed.

Superior’s offensive inconsistency hurt them again against Thayer central. After streaking out to a 14-2 first quarter lead, they allowed the Titans back into the game as Superior trailed 20-19 at the half. Superior was unable to regain the lead and was relegated to the consolation round bracket with their loss.

Hunter Healey led the Wildcats with 23 points against deshler. He grabbed four rebounds. Jackson Gilbert added 10 points and three rebounds. Conner Blackstone came through with nine points and two rebounds. Zeke Meyer and Dane Miller scored five points each. Miller landed seven rebounds with Meyer grabbing three. Jedd Whitmore netted two points. Seth Schnakenberg scored one point while securing two rebounds.

Healey tallied 10 points against Thayer Central while pulling away two rebounds. Miller scored six points while landing seven rebounds. Blackstone scored five points and nailed down three rebounds. Gilbert. Meyer, Schnakenberg and Whitmore pumped through four points apiece. Gilbert. Gilbert, Schnakenberg and Whitmore nabbed two rebounds each. Meyer landed one rebound.

The Wildcats host Smith Center, Monday, at the high school gymnasium.
