Smoldering grain causes problems at Sedan elevator

An investigation was launched to determine the cause of an ongoing fire at the Sedan elevator in northern Nuckolls County.

In the first week of December, elevator workers noted grain in a million bushel bin was getting hot. On Dec. 22, the hot grain became an official fire. After that day Edgar firemen were called several times to battle the fire.

Last week the Clay County newspaper published a picture taken on Jan. 5 of smoke billowing from the bin located near the center of the elevator complex.

While the possible cause was being investigated, workers have been removing the grain.
