The 2021 High School Volleyball season is now safely in the record books with the State Tournament just completed. L-N ended the season in the District Finals with a won-loss record of 17-15. This year the Lady Raiders were led by four seniors, a couple of juniors, a lone sophomores and a couple of freshmen. It was a roller coaster ride of a state Class C-2 volleyball tournament for the Superior High School team. The Wildcats entered the tournament as the number four seed. The Superior High School volleyball team has qualified for the state tournament for the fifth consecutive year. Thirty-two Class D-2 Eight Man Football teams began their journey in the State Playoff system last Thursday. Among those 32 teams there were four games where the lower seeded team won. Unfortunately, for Lawrence- Nelson players and fans, the Raiders were not among those four. Timing is the key. They say it is hard to beat any team three times in a season and we’ve seen plenty of examples of that over the years. However, we get a whole new chance this year. The L-N Lady Raiders finished the regular season of volleyball last week with a victory over Franklin. The 3-0 win gave the girls a won/loss record of 15 wins, 14 losses on the season. The Rock Hills Cross Country team ran the regional meet at Centralia Lake on Saturday. Ninety young men lined up to run the course on a cool Saturday morning. Freshman, Trystyn Reynolds placed 39th running the course in 20:35. Freshman Kobi Bowers placed 44th finishing the race in 20:52. The three members of the Rock Hills High School cross country team attempted to qualify for the state meet Saturday over the 5K Centralia Lake course in Centralia. Trystyn Reynolds and Kobi Bowers, freshmen, joined senior Kit Wagner for the race. Reynolds placed 39th with his time of 20.35. The Rock Hills High School football team closed out the regular season portion of their schedule with a 52-6 loss to St, John’s-Tipton at Beloit Friday. The game was called with 10:07 remaining in the third period because of the 45-point mercy rule. The loss left the Grizzlies with a 1-6 record for the season along with one cancellation. The two runners who qualified for the state cross country meet from the Superior High School boys and girls cross country teams, Laci Kirchhoff and Hunter Mazzulla, competed in the 5K race over the Kearney Country Club course at Kearney Saturday. Mazzulla, a freshman, finished in 81st place in the 133 runner field with his time of 19:33.8. Kirchhoff, a junior, took 72nd place in the 125 runner field with her time of 23:40. The Superior High School football team lost a heartbreaker, 14-10, to Hastings St. Cecilia, at Duncan Field in Hastings, Friday. The loss brought the 2021 season to a close for the Wildcats. Superior finished the season with a 4-5 record. It was the final game for 11-man football as well for at least two years. The Lawrence-Nelson football team exited the Class D-2 football playoffs with their 60-20 loss to the Sandhills-Thedford Knights at Dunning Thursday. The Raiders were unable to thwart the Sandhills-Thedford running game. The Knights ground out 291 yards on the ground. The Raiders relied on their aerial game to propel the offense. The newspaper has mentioned before what tough schedules the NSAA arranges for the L-N Raider Football Team year after year. 2021 was no difference and the Raiders had a little trouble during the year matching up with their hopes and expectations. "Save the best until the last" We're not sure this applies in running a Cross Country race, but the South Central Red Raiders boys (Sandy Creek and Lawrence-Nelson) seemed to do that at the Class C-4 District Meet at Aurora last week. Last week was another one of those busy weeks for the Lady Raider Volleyball Team. They played three games before two more over the weekend in the conference tournament.
