    It was homecoming for Superior High School at Brodstone Memorial Field Friday. The stands were filled to capacity. The Palmyra Panthers were the opponent. Like Superior, they had lost their season opener. On paper, they seemed to have a distinct size advantage. But paper does not play the game.     The Nuckolls County Knights, the middle school football team made up of students from Superior and Lawrence-Nelson, opened their season last Tuesday. The Blue Hill Bobcats took the field as the opponents at Lawrence. The Knights established their bona fides with a 55-yard touchdown on their first play of the game.     The Rock Hills girls volleyball team is off to a fast start. They swept the Natoma Tigers 25-3 and 25-16 in two sets last Tuesday at Tipton. They couldn’t quite keep up with their nemesis, St. John’s-Tipton and fell in three sets, 25-11, 14-25 and 18-25, to sport a 3-1 record.     The Rock Hills High School cross country team opened the 2024 season at the Tescott Invitational last Wednesday. There were 16 teams entered in the vent. The boys varsity team finished in fifth place. Boys varsity runners were Tristyn Reynolds who finished in 19th place. Spencer Lindberg took 23rd place. Griffin Dunstan held 28th place.     The Rock Hills Grizzlies made short work of plucking the feathers of the St.John’s-Tipton Catholic Blujays Friday at Beloit. Rock Hills needed all of two quarters to score 46 points while holding St. John’s scoreless. The mercy rule was invoked and the Grizzlies had an early arrival back home. Rock Hills sprinted out to a 30-0 first quarter lead while the Grizzlies defense held the Blujays scoreless on the ground.     The Nuckolls County Ag Society hosted two Nebraska High School rodeos over the weekend, one Saturday and the other on Sunday on the fairgrounds at Nelson. Four contestants were from Nuckolls County: Bayleigh Bohlen, Jasper Elledge, Monty Hajny and Josie Hajny. Josie also competes in barrells and break-away roping.     The Superior High School volleyball team found the transition from practice to actual game to be tougher than expected. The Wildcats hosted the Thayer Central Titans at Superior Thursday.     It was a long bus ride to Howells for the Lawrence-Nelson Raiders for their first game of the season. It was an even longer ride home after falling 36-8 to the Howells-Dodge Jaguars. Howells-Dodge sported a 14 point lead after the first quarter. The Raiders scored their lone touchdown in the second period.
