The weather was perfect for football and mosquitoes at Superior's Brodstone Memorial Field Friday as the Wildcats opened their 2022 season with a 52-20 loss to the Alma Cardinals. The event was pushed to Friday from its originally scheduled play date of Thursday because of a conflicting event. Superior finished in second place in the eight team field. The Rock Hills Grizzlies open their 2022 volleyball season Tuesday. The team enters the season with a new coaching staff. Jana Coil is the head coach with Tiffany Collins the assistant coach. It was just a little cooler Friday evening and a lot less humid when these ‘die-hard’ golfers teed off at the Elk Creek Country Club in Nelson. The golfers could choose only three clubs and golf their whole round. Hadley Ostdiek of Nelson was crowned the 2022 Webster County Rodeo Princess on July 21 in Bladen. She will be an eighth grader at Lawrence Nelson this school year. Oakley Ward and Sadie Rempel both attend Superior High School. Rempel is a senior and Ward is a freshman. The two share a common bond with their love for competing in rodeo events. Ward inherited her love for the rodeo from her mother, Melissa. One of her two brothers also competes in youth rodeo events. Ward began riding horses before she was able to walk. Meili Ost competed July 9, at a USATF Junior Olympics regional qualifying track meet at Fort Osage High School in Blue Springs, Mo. This multi-state meet included teams from Kansas, Oklahoma, Missouri and Arkansas. Meili, a member of the Kansas Flyers track team, competed in the 800-meter run and the 4x800-meter relay. The Lawrence Country Club was the setting Sunday, June 12, for the 62nd Annual Men's Cow Chip Open Tournament. Forty-nine golfers participated in the two-round open. Comfortable conditions early quickly turned into a breezy and sultry second round for the men. Kelly Karmazin shot a total of 67 to claim victory with rounds of 34 and 33.
