    Last week was an interesting week of basketball for the L-N Boys' basketball team. First of all, they played three games in a five day span. Secondly, the first game was an over time game. Then, the second game was a double over time game. Most importantly, the boys added to their winning record which now stands at 9-4.     Close games generally represent evenly matched teams, both of which plan to win. It was overtime, when the Raiders scored eight points and the Grizzlies scored only seven points that finally ended the game last Tuesday night when Lawrence-Nelson traveled to Mankato to play basketball. In the first quarter, it looked as if the Lawrence-Nelson Raiders might easily win. They scored 18 points while the Grizzlies scored only 10.     Rock Hills marched into the game with the Lawrence-Nelson Raider girls with two straight wins. One over Stockton 50-27 on Monday, Feb. 13, and the other Friday, Feb. 10 over St. John’s Tipton 60-58. The Lady Grizzlies added a third win last Tuesday when they won over the Raiders 44-39.     This week the Grizzlies are occupied with the NPL tournament. It is an 11 team mid-season league tournament featuring Sylvan-Lucas, Natoma, Osborne, Lincoln, Rock Hills, Tescott, Pike Valley, Stockton, Thunder Ridge, St. John’s-Tipton and Lakeside. The tournament began Friday with three play-in games for both the boys and girls divisions. The winners advanced to the quarter finals Monday.     Superior blew past the Heartland Huskies 81-30 last Tuesday. The Wildcats have now won seven contests by 30 points or more this season: Wilber-Claytonia (59) Heartland (51); Meridan (45), St. Patrick (40) and Centennial (31).     Saturday afternoon, the Superior Lady Wildcats moved to 12 - 2 when they won over the Sandy Creek Cougars 49-25 at Sandy Creek. The win was not as easy as the score would suggest.     The L-N girls' basketball team is about three points away from winning their last five ball games. A two point loss to McCool Junction prohibited that claim to fame, but winning four of their last five games improved the team's record to 4-6 after five tough games to start the season.     On Jan. 10 in Beloit, the Rock Hills Grizzlies, played a tough game and had a good run at a comeback towards the end of the game against St. John’s-Tipton Catholic boys, but fell to the Blujays by a score of 78 to 67 in the end.     The ‘Holiday vacation’ from extracurricular activities for high schools in Nebraska was good for the L/N High School girls basketball team.     Nona L. (Wagoner) Lechtenberg was born on May 23, 1949, in Clarinda, Iowa, to Glen and Marjorie (Bair) Wagoner. She died peacefully on Tuesday, Dec. 31, 2024, at the age of 75.     Other than the greatest story ever told (the Christmas Story) last week’s second greatest story was the L-N girls’ basketball team trip to western Nebraska to play Hi-Line (Eustis) High School. The Class D-2 Lady Raiders took on another of the 18 or 19 teams in a higher class. And . . . they came home with a win. A 49-41 victory.
