Members of the Superior Volunteer Fire Department got an early wake-up call Monday morning. They were called to 1255 Idaho Street where a home was reported to be on fire. Most likely as the firemen sped to the scene they were remembering the call the week before which left two people homeless. Following a weekend fire, a young Superior couple is without a home and their possessions. Firemen were called about 12:50 Saturday afternoon to 1104 N. Park after a motorist saw smoke pouring from the house. Jasper Butler and Rhiannan Pierce were in the house but asleep at the time and unaware an electrical system failure in the bathroom-kitchen area had apparently started the fire. Thanks to the alert from the motorists, all occupants and pets were able to escape the fire unharmed....
Four houses got at least a temporary stay of execution when the Superior City Council met Monday evening. If repair progress continues as expected, the houses will receive pardons. Their previous owners had allowed the properties to run afoul of city standards and they had been placed on the list of homes to be removed. Anthony Roy, from Bogue, Kansas, is the new Mankato city administrator. Roy has been in local government for approximately 10 years, both city and county. That, along with a deep interest in Jewell County, pushed him to apply for and accept the city administrator position for the City of Mankato. Members of a family with a longtime connection to the Lawrence business community have closed out an 80 year association with a motor vehicle parts store in Hastings. Preliminary results from the 2023 Nebraska November firearm deer season show statewide harvest was down 18 percent from 2022 and down 29 percent from the 2018 to 2022 average. The Nebraska Game and Parks Commission expected these results for the Nov. 11 to 19 season based on several factors that indicated a decline in harvest was coming. Lower harvest and deer populations were recorded in 2022 and lead to a reduced number of permits available for 2023.
