Boone Scott, a Cub Scout, greeted visitors to Candy Cane Lane Monday evening. The Cub Scouts and the Elks Lodge were in charge that evening. On Dec. 17, 2023 Donald Faimon of Lawrence, was presented with the quilt of Valor for his military service. The quilt was designed and made by his Aunt Theresa Kulek of Hastings. The December monthly meeting for the Mankato Chamber of Commerce took place last Wednesday with 11 members present. The Chamber discussed the community birthday calendars. The movie Wish is scheduled to be shown on Friday and Saturday at the Ute and again on the last three days of 2023. The title is appropriate for the current state of affairs at the Ute. Central Community College honored 372 graduate candidates during its 2023 winter commencement Friday, Dec. 15, at Columbus. The Lawrence Community and Santa Claus got together again this year to visit the youngsters in Lawrence Sunday. The event took place at the Lawrence American Legion Hall. Thursday, Dec. 14, was a special night as the Legion Family gathered to assemble plates of cookies that included goodies provided by members. The plates, along with holiday greetings, were delivered to older community members and residents of local long term care facilities and brought many smiles and words of thanks from the recipients. A 4.2 magnitude earthquake rattled south-central Nebraska on Sunday, with tremors felt in communities like Red Cloud, according to the U.S. Geological Survey. The USGS recorded the earthquake approximately 6 miles north-northeast of Guide Rock in Webster County at about 1:30 p.m. It had a depth of a little more than 4 miles with tremors stretching to just south of Hastings, according to a USGS map. In years past, the December Bloodmobile visit to Lawrence was looked upon as an opportunity for local residents to give a Christmas Gift to some unknown, needy person. The Red Cross set a goal of 42 units for Lawrence this year. However, area residents came out in force and donated a total of 54 units to the Red Cross to use as it seemed best. Two donors were deferred for medical reasons. Co-ordinators for the Lawrence Red Cross visits are Jackie Kirchner and Eileen Mazour. Five gracious Lawrence homeowners opened their doors to the public on Saturday, Dec. 2. Around 75 people visited the homes that were beautifully decorated for the holiday season.
