Monday morning, large flakes of heavy wet snow fell throughout the area for several hours. With moderate temperatures and only a slight breeze, it seems much of the snow melted, but it came so heavy and fast it was difficult to be sure. This scene features a lone walker headed to the Superior Post Office. For Christmas, in the rural country side south of Ruskin, Arlo and Petersen decorated this 1948 John Deere tractor with a wreath. The tractor was once owned and operated by a great uncle,...

This week as we leave 2023 behind and cross over in 2024, we are somewhat uncertain what the new year will bring. Randy Nielsen, an Express photographer, said entering the new years is somewhat like what it was for him on a recent foggy morning when he crossed the Republican River bridge southwest of Hardy. He had left Nebraska behind and was entering Kansas but he couldnʼt see the mysteries that Kansas held. The bridge straddles the Republic and Jewell county lines and is less than a mile...
Tis indeed the season to keep area children warm. So far this winter, 45 new coats purchased through the Superior Community Corporation’s “Coats for Kids” project, have been distributed! The community corporation collects the money and purchases the coats. Peggy Meyer continues to provide a valuable service and keeps track of who got a coat so there is no fear of ‘doub...

Those folks in this area who were dreaming of a white Christmas got what they wanted this week, and perhaps a bunch more. The folks who had Christmas travel plans, they didn’t fare so well. It wasn’t the storm of the century as some early forecasts indicated it might be but it was enough to snarl the holiday plans of many. Though much of our prime circulation missed the blizzard, generally several inches of snow were received. The storm which began...

Those investigating the case are reluctant to say much with the investigation continuing. Apparently the firing of a gun which left one person dead ended an ongoing domestic dispute. Molly Gruber, 35, was taken by ambulance to the...
