Webber recently upgraded its street-security lighting from aging mercury vapor style lighting, to energy-efficient LED lighting. Twenty-four lights have been replaced to date. The new lighting improves safety, security, visibility and reduces the energy required for the security lights in the community. The Jewell Apartments Board of Directors met last Monday. The Kansas Department of Transportation approved bids for state highway construction and maintenance projects. The letting took place Feb. 21, in Topeka. Mitchell County had one bid approved: K-14, bridge No. 040 over Salt Creek located 2.52 miles north of the Lincoln County line, bridge repair, L & M Contractors Inc., Great Bend, $627,960.50. Last Wednesday, the South Heartland Board of Health presented their annual public health awards to individuals who are furthering the work of public health. On Monday the Nuckolls County Clerk’s office which supervises all elections in Nuckolls County mailed this year’s first early voting ballots for the May 14 statewide primary to voters who completed early voting applications and fulfilled the new voter ID requirement. Early Saturday afternoon, the Oak, Nelson and Davenport fire departments responded to a shed fire at a private residence in Oak. The fire is believed to have started in a chicken coop and the high winds caused it too spread to a another shed on the property and into the trees. The Keenagers met on Thursday, March 21, at the Lawrence Fire Hall. It was a beautiful spring day. Pam and Eileen hosted the wonderful meal of smothered chicken breast on rice with green beans and a dinner roll. Dessert was the choice of angel food cake or tasty strawberry poke cake.
