    Beginning Monday, April 1, the Kansas Department of Transportation schedule calls for the start of a millinf and overlay project on 22.3 miles of U.S. 36 and K-128 in Jewell County. Work on U.S. 36 will begin at the west city limits of Mankato and continue west to the southbound K-128 and U.S. 36 junction.     The polls were certainly not crowded last Tuesday when Jewell County voters were offered an opportunity to express their choices in a presidential preference primary. It was the first time in more than 30 years the Kansas legislature offered the voters such an opportunity, The polls were open from 7 a.m. to 7 p.m. and 220 people chose to vote.     NEK-CAP, Inc. and the Kansas Food Bank are partnering to provide summer meals for youth (age 1-18) this summer. This program is offered in the counties of Jewell, Mitchell, Osborne, Republic, Smith and Washington. With the help of local health departments and hunger advocates, NEK-CAP is able to “fill the gap” and provide missing summer meals to children at risk of going hungry when school is not in session.     On Feb. 20, members of the Nelson Community Club went before the Nelson City Council during a special meeting to propose a half-a-cent sales tax increase, over a period of ten years, to fund an economic development plan.     Monday’s storm has been blamed by the South Central Public Power District at Nelson for a large scale power outage that left many homes without electric service.     The Nuckolls County Board of commissioners met at the county courthouse in Nelson, Monday. All three commissioners were present. The board accepted two bids for gravel for the county road department. Bidders were Mid-Nebraska Aggregate, Gibbon, and Deweese Sand and Gravel.     Visitors to Lovewell Lake will find something new this year, The Kansas Department of Wildlife and Parks utilized aquatic nuisance species prevention funding to purchase clean, drain and dry stations.     The Bostwick Irrigation District Office in Red Cloud recently distributed a newsletter to farmers served by the district. At the time the newsletter was written, the elevation of Harlan County Reservoir was 1.939.3 feet above sea level which is near the current elevation.     In March of 1918 plans were announced for roller skating rink at Nelson. In later years rinks were also opened in Hardy and Superior. By the 1970s all the rinks were closed and the community of Superior began a fund drive to build and equip a new rink which became known as the Simic Recreation Center. After being closed with the arrival of the COVID pandemic, a community group is again raising funds with the goal of making repairs and reopening the rink by the fall of 2024.
