Nelson Fun Days began with perfect weather Saturday morning. It would be anything but perfect when late afternoon arrived. The days'events kicked off with breakfast prepared and served by the Nelson Community Club. The temperature was cool and a light breeze wafted through Harbine Park as the fun run, walk and bike event took place. Royce Schott and Vicki Ensign manned the washerboard table. The Nebraska Department of Revenue has compiled a comparison of net taxable sales for all Nebraska counties for March 2024 and March 2023. For Superior, retail sales declined 10.3 percent to just less than $2.2 million. In the same time period, Nuckolls County retail sales declined 2.8 percent to about $3.895 million. March Thayer County’s net retail sales fell 21.3 percent to $2.695 million. Webster County sales grew 7.2 percent to about $1.728 million. Adams County sales were almost flat, growing 0.4 percent. Saturday, July 29, 2024, was a day the village of Lawrence lost a couple of dwellings to fire. Not “bad” fires, but these are called “controlled burns.” (That is they were intentional burns, controlled by the Lawrence Volunteer Fire Department.) Chesterfest was held this past weekend with two days of "Music, Food and Fun!" Things kicked off on Friday night with a sand volleyball tournament. The Superior Police Department has been busy. On Tuesday, June 11, the department responded to a reported assault call. A Superior resident was arrested and charged with making terroristic threats and criminal mischief. The suspect was located hiding in the trunk of a car. Several area volunteer fire departments were recipients of fire fighting foam thanks to a grant from the Nebraska Environmental Trust. The foam is Micro-Blaze, the only microbial Class A and B spill firefighting agent which helps prevent flashback. It can be used on structural, tire, barn and hay and hydrocarbon spill fires as well as industrial water spills. The foam has a 10 year shelf life. The grant allowed 1,000 gallons of foam to be distributed to 13 departments which are members of the South Central Mutual Aid group. The volunteer fire...
